The physical formats and what each means for condition, completeness, and value.

Format is destiny in collecting. A cartridge, an optical disc, and a PC big-box age differently, complete differently, and fail differently — and each demands its own inspection discipline. Knowing what to check, and what tends to go wrong, is format-specific knowledge that transfers only partly from one to the next.
Cartridges
The most durable format and the one that survives loose in the greatest numbers. Cartridge condition centres on the label (fading, wear, writing, stickers), the shell (cracks, yellowing, correct screw count), and the board inside (correct ROM revision, no corrosion on the contacts, authentic chips). Battery-backed carts add a failure mode — dead save batteries — that a serious CIB copy will have addressed. The cartridge's durability is why its collecting depth lives in the box and paper, not the media.
Optical discs
CD- and DVD-based media introduced fragility the cartridge era never had: scratches, disc rot, delamination, and cracked hubs. Condition inspection means checking the play surface, the hub, and — critically — the correct pressing (matrix codes and ring text identify the print run, just as box revisions do for cartridges). Multi-disc titles add a completeness dimension: all discs present, correct, and matched to the release. The jewel case and its tray are themselves condition-graded and frequently replaced, which the careful buyer verifies.
The PC big-box
The large cardboard PC box is the format most punishing to preserve and, consequently, the one where completeness commands the steepest premium. A complete big-box can contain a dozen components — manual, reference card, maps, feelies, the disc sleeve, registration paper — and the box itself is large, thin-walled, and prone to crushing. A genuinely complete, undamaged big-box of a landmark PC title is one of the scarcer objects in collecting precisely because so few survived intact.
