The luxury console — SNK's home version of its MVS arcade hardware, sold at a price that put it out of reach of almost everyone. The AES delivered genuinely arcade-perfect ports on enormous cartridges, and because the home system sold in tiny numbers relative to the arcade, the home releases are some of the most expensive cartridges in all of collecting. The library is a connoisseur's set of fighting games, run-and-guns and shooters, and its grails — late, low-run home releases — reach five figures complete. Where most platforms are collected on scale, the Neo Geo AES is collected on scarcity at the cartridge level: nearly every home release is rare by the standards of any other console.

The Neo Geo released in two cartridge formats: the AES home cartridge and the MVS arcade cartridge. They are not interchangeable, and the AES home version is almost always the rarer and more valuable of the two — the single most important distinction on the platform.
AES carts and boxes differ by region, and the scarce version of a title is often region-specific (Kizuna Encounter's European release). Region determines which version is the grail.
AES games shipped with elaborate boxes, plastic snap cases, manuals and inserts. Completeness is central to value on a platform where even the packaging is scarce.
