NGPC
Neo Geo Pocket Color · 1999–2001
SNK's handheld — a clicky-sticked, long-battery-life machine that arrived in 1999, made a strong case against the Game Boy Color, and was killed within two years by SNK's financial collapse and a non-existent marketing budget. The library is small (around 80 titles worldwide) but punches far above its size: superb portable fighting games, the SNK-vs-Capcom card-battler crossovers, and a clutch of cult puzzle and RPG titles. That quality-to-scarcity ratio is the collecting appeal — a manageable set of genuinely good games, several of which printed in tiny Western runs as the platform died. A connoisseur's handheld with a devoted following.

Three titles to know
The cultural and market anchors. If you take three things from this room, take these.
The platform's beloved standout — a card-battling RPG crossover of the SNK and Capcom rosters, released in SNK and Capcom versions. A cult classic with a small Western run, it's the handheld's signature game and a steadily-climbing object.
A late, tiny-print tactical mech RPG released as the platform collapsed — one of the rarest Western NGPC games and a key target for a complete US set. Emblematic of the handheld's late-life scarcity.
Sega's surprise contribution to a rival's handheld — a genuinely excellent portable Sonic built in the Genesis mould. A fascinating cross-company object and one of the library's most accessible highlights.

First-print indicators
The grammar collectors use to authenticate and date copies of this platform.
Only around 40 titles released in the West before SNK's collapse, making a complete US set a defined goal. The Japanese library runs deeper.
Card Fighters' Clash released in distinct SNK and Capcom versions with different rosters. Both are collected; the version is a key cataloguing fact.
NGPC games shipped in small boxes with manuals and inserts. Completeness is central to value on a platform where complete boxes are scarce.
The Western grails (Faselei!, late RPGs) printed in tiny numbers as SNK collapsed and the line was cut. Late catalogue position drives scarcity.
Library and packaging differ by region, and the scarce version of a title can be region-specific. Japan's catalogue is the deepest.
