Reading the comp — what a sold price actually tells you
Matching tier, variant, grade, and venue before you trust a comparable sale.

'It sold for this' is the most quoted and most misused sentence in collecting. A sold price is only evidence if the copy that sold matches the copy you're pricing — same tier, same variant, same grade, same region, same kind of venue — and even then, one sale is an anecdote, not a market. Reading comps is the discipline of knowing which sold prices actually apply.
The five things that must match
Before a comp counts, confirm it matches on every axis that moves price. A mismatch on any one makes the number misleading.
Tier
Sealed, CIB, or Loose — three markets. A sealed comp says nothing about a CIB copy.
Variant / print
First print vs reprint, box variant, seal type. A reprint comp underprices a first print and vice versa.
Grade
The exact grade and, for sealed, the seal grade. A grade step is a price step near the top.
Region
NTSC-U, NTSC-J, PAL — distinct markets. Never blend a US comp into a PAL valuation.
Venue
Auction house, marketplace, or private sale — each carries different premiums, fees, and buyer pools.
One sale is not a market
A single comp can be an outlier — two determined bidders, a mispriced listing, a private deal with unseen terms. The market is the pattern across several matched sales, not the highest or most recent one. Weight the cluster, discount the extremes, and treat a lone eye-catching number with suspicion until others confirm it. The disciplined valuer builds a picture from many matched comps, not a headline from one.
Freshness and direction
Markets move, so a comp has a shelf life — a two-year-old sale in a segment that has since corrected is a historical note, not a current value. Read comps in time order to see direction as well as level: a title clearing rising numbers across recent matched sales tells a different story from one clearing falling numbers at the same average.
