Because NTSC-U, NTSC-J, and PAL are separate markets with separate supply and demand, the same title routinely trades at different prices in each. A game abundant and cheap in its home region can be scarce and dear abroad — a genuine arbitrage. But the gap on the screen is not the gap in your pocket: shipping, fees, customs, currency, and authenticity risk all stand between the two prices, and only a disciplined read clears a real margin.
Where the gaps come from
Regional price gaps are structural. A title's home region usually has the deepest supply and the most competitive prices; abroad, the same title is scarcer and often carries an import premium. Japanese domestic releases, in particular, can be far cheaper sourced from Japan than from Western dealers who have already priced in the import. The gap is the reward for reaching into a market others find harder to access — which is precisely why the friction of reaching it matters.

A region arbitrage clears only when the price gap comfortably exceeds all the friction — shipping, taxes, currency, and a discount for the added authenticity risk. Run the full landed cost before you buy, not the headline price, and favour trusted regional sellers or proxies who reduce the authenticity risk. Done with discipline, sourcing across regions is one of the few genuine edges in the hobby; done on the headline gap alone, it is a way to pay foreign prices plus friction for a domestic object.
