Why region defines a different game, a different box, and a different market.

The same title released in North America, Japan, and Europe is three different collectibles. Region shapes the box art, the language, the packaging format, the print run, and — decisively — the market, because each region has its own collector base, its own scarcities, and its own price structure. Reading region is as fundamental as reading tier.
The three principal regions
The collector shorthand maps to the old broadcast standards, and each carries a distinct packaging and market culture.
NTSC-U
North America. The largest Western collector market for most platforms, and the region whose 'Black Label' first prints anchor the disc era. English packaging, and the default reference market for many Western titles.
NTSC-J
Japan. Often the deepest catalogue and the origin region for most franchises. Distinct box formats and a domestic collector culture; some of the rarest variants of any franchise are the Japanese editions.
PAL
Europe and territories. Fragmented across languages and sub-markets, frequently the smallest print runs of the three for a given title — which makes certain PAL releases structurally scarce despite the region's lower profile.
Region changes the object and the price
Because print runs, survival rates, and demand differ by region, the same title can have three very different price structures. A game common in NTSC-U can be scarce in PAL; a Japanese first print can carry a variant — a bonus disc, a different seal, an alternate cover — that doesn't exist elsewhere. The completist tracks all three; the focused collector picks a region and treats the others as separate projects.
Why franchises are best read region-first
For import-heavy franchises the region axis is where the rarest objects live — the Japanese special editions, the small-run PAL releases, the region-exclusive variants. Building a franchise collection means deciding early whether you are collecting one region cleanly or chasing the cross-region variant set, because the second is a far larger and more expensive undertaking.
