Spotting reseals — the sealed tier's central threat

Wrap tension, seam placement, and the tells that separate a factory seal from a convincing fake.

Because a sealed game's value lives in its shrinkwrap, the fraud that matters most is faking the wrap. A reseal takes an opened — or empty, or wrong-contents — copy and re-shrinkwraps it to look factory-fresh, and a good one can turn a €50 object into a four-figure ask. Reseal literacy is not optional at this tier; it is the price of admission.

What the wrap should look like

A factory seal has a characteristic tension, seam pattern, and interaction with the box — the way it hugs the corners, folds at the edges, and sits against any hangtab. Reseals get these subtly wrong: wrap that's too loose or too tight, seams in the wrong place or the wrong pattern for the era, edges that fold unlike the factory line. The tells are small and specific, which is why they must be learned against period-correct references for the exact title, not judged by general impression.

The common reseal tells

No single sign is proof, but a cluster is damning.

Wrong seam type or placement
A seam pattern that doesn't match the factory method for the title's era — an H where it should be a V, a seam on the wrong face.
Tension and finish anomalies
Wrap noticeably looser, tighter, thicker, or shinier than factory; overlaps and welds that look hand-done.
Fresh wrap on aged cardboard
A box showing its age under a wrap that looks brand-new is a contradiction — genuine wrap ages with its box.
Hangtab and edge interaction
On hangtab-era boxes, wrap that interacts wrongly with the tab, or covers a tab that shouldn't be there, is a red flag.

When to defer to a house

At the value where a reseal would genuinely hurt, the rational defence is to buy graded or to have the copy authenticated — the grading houses assess seal originality as part of their verdict, and that assessment is much of what you pay them for. Personal seal literacy protects you on mid-tier copies and helps you screen candidates; on trophy money, deferring to a house's authentication is not weakness, it is discipline.
