CD-i
Philips CD-i · 1991–1998
Philips's interactive-multimedia gamble — a CD-i player pitched in 1991 as an everything box for education, music and games, and remembered almost entirely for the games it should never have had. The deal that let Philips make Zelda and Mario titles produced a clutch of notoriously poor licensed games that have become cult collectibles precisely because of their infamy. Beyond those, the library is a strange archive of FMV adventures, edutainment and early-CD experiments. The CD-i is collected for its curiosity value and for a handful of genuinely scarce releases, a platform whose grails are famous for being bad rather than good.

Three titles to know
The cultural and market anchors. If you take three things from this room, take these.
The third and rarest of the CD-i Zelda titles — a live-action-tile oddity shipped in small numbers and the hardest of the infamous trio to complete. The high-end grail of the platform's notoriety-driven market.
The only Mario game Nintendo never made — a Philips-developed puzzle title famous for its FMV cutscenes and its place in the CD-i's licensed-game legend. The cultural anchor of the platform's cult collecting.

First-print indicators
The grammar collectors use to authenticate and date copies of this platform.
The CD-i Zelda and Mario games are the platform's defining collectibles. Distinguishing the three Zelda titles and Hotel Mario, and their completeness, drives the high end of the market.
Some FMV titles require the add-on Digital Video Cartridge to run. Whether a game needs it affects playability and the value of a complete hardware-plus-software set.
CD-era completeness — jewel case, manual and inserts — is central to value, particularly for the scarce licensed titles where complete copies are uncommon.
The grails are late, small-run releases. Catalogue position and notoriety together drive CD-i value rather than gameplay reputation.
