The beginning of everything — the first commercial home video game console, released by Magnavox in 1972, three years before Atari's Home Pong. Ralph Baer's 'Brown Box' design played its games using interchangeable circuit cards and plastic screen overlays taped to the television, with score kept on paper and physical accessories — dice, poker chips, play money — bundled in the box. There is no software market in the modern sense; the Odyssey is collected as a historical artifact, where the console, its full set of game cards, the overlays, the light-rifle peripheral and the original packaging together constitute the object. Completeness and provenance, not rarity of individual games, define this market — the foundation stone of the entire hobby.

The Odyssey 'games' are circuit cards plus plastic screen overlays. A complete console requires the full set of cards and the fragile, frequently-lost overlays — overlays are often the hardest components to find intact.
The original box included dice, poker chips, play money and score sheets to support the games. A complete Odyssey requires these paper-and-plastic accessories, almost all of which were discarded.
The Shooting Gallery bundle added a light rifle — one of gaming's first peripherals. Its presence, condition and functionality materially define the value of a complete set.
