TurboGrafx-CD / PC Engine CD · 1988–1994

The format that brought CD-ROM to consoles first — NEC's CD-ROM² add-on, launched in Japan in 1988 and in the US as the TurboGrafx-CD in 1990, years ahead of Sega and Sony. The US library is small and was poorly distributed, which makes complete American TurboGrafx-CD games among the scarcer and more valuable CD-era collectibles; the Japanese PC Engine CD library is far deeper and is one of the most revered import-collecting fields in the hobby, rich with shoot-'em-ups, RPGs and the format's signature anime-cutscene presentation. A platform collected on two tracks — a scarce US set and a deep, prestigious Japanese one.
