Microsoft's first console — a black monolith with a hard drive, built on PC architecture, that established the Xbox brand as a third pillar almost entirely on the strength of Halo. The library is around 1,000 NTSC-U titles, and the collecting market is modest but distinctive: the platform's marquee object isn't a game at all but the Steel Battalion controller, a two-handed, forty-button mech cockpit bundled with its game; alongside it sit the launch Halo, a handful of low-print late releases, and the Limited and Collector's editions of the era. As with most sixth-generation discs, the rarities are niche and late, while the famous games are abundant.

Three titles to know
The cultural and market anchors. If you take three things from this room, take these.
The platform's grail, and one of the most extravagant peripherals ever sold. Capcom's mech sim shipped bundled with a two-handed, forty-button controller and triple foot pedals — a full cockpit. Complete with the controller and all components, it's the apex Xbox object by a wide margin.
The launch title that made the Xbox viable — the origin object of the entire brand. Abundant, but a high-grade sealed launch print is the platform's most meaningful standard collectible and the physical record of the game that built the console.
A low-print Sega arcade racer that became one of the most expensive standard Xbox games. Emblematic of the platform's rare tail: niche Sega and late releases that underprinted into a small market.

First-print indicators
The grammar collectors use to authenticate and date copies of this platform.
Best-sellers were reissued under the silver 'Platinum Hits' banner. The banner disqualifies a copy as a first print; the original black-spine release is the first-print form.
The Steel Battalion package lives or dies on the controller. A complete set requires the forty-button controller, foot pedals and all inserts in working condition — a disc-only copy is a fraction of the value.
The platform's rarities are niche Sega ports and late releases (OutRun 2, Gunvalkyrie) that underprinted as the 360 approached. Catalogue position and publisher obscurity drive Xbox scarcity.
Halo 2 and several other titles shipped in Limited or Collector's editions with metal cases and bonus content. The lavish edition is the collectible; the standard disc is abundant.
Xbox discs carry hub mastering and pressing codes that distinguish early pressings from later repressings within a release.
