Why collectors care

inal Fantasy is a 1987 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first game in Square's Final Fantasy series, created by Hironobu Sakaguchi. The story follows four youths called the Warriors of Light, who each carry one of their world's four elemental crystals which have been darkened by the four Elemental Fiends. Together, they quest to defeat these evil forces, restore light to the crystals, and save their world.

Final Fantasy is the Western introduction of the JRPG genre at NES scale. The 1990 first print pre-dates the JRPG market's commercial maturity — Square released only ~700,000 units in the US before transitioning to SNES production. Sealed WATA 9.4 A+ trades $3,000–10,000; the Square-publisher branding (rare on NES boxes) is itself a collector signal.

Square Original (1990)

Single production run from July 1990 through ~1992. H-tab hangtab variant; Square publisher branding; no reprints with Player's Choice ribbon (the title didn't sell enough to warrant a reprint at the time).

Universal indicators
  1. 01Square publisher branding bottom-right of cover — distinctive among NES boxes (Square rarely published direct on NES in the US).First print indicator
  2. 02No Player's Choice ribbon — the title was discontinued before reprints in the US, so all genuine first-print copies lack the ribbon.First print indicator
  3. 03Nintendo Seal of Quality 1989 revised oval variant (period-correct for 1990 release).
