TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine · 1987–1994
NEC's HuCard machine — a giant in Japan as the PC Engine, an also-ran in the US as the TurboGrafx-16, and a cult collector's platform on both sides. The US library is small (around 130 HuCard titles) and led by one of the most notorious grails in the hobby: Magical Chase, a late, tiny-print shooter whose complete copies trade in the four figures. Beneath it sits a deep shoot-'em-up and action library, and an even deeper NTSC-J PC Engine catalogue that is one of the richest import veins in collecting. The credit-card-sized HuCard format and the platform's CD add-on make it a distinctive, format-driven pursuit.

Three titles to know
The cultural and market anchors. If you take three things from this room, take these.
One of the most famous single-game grails in collecting. A late, charming horizontal shooter released in a tiny US run as the platform faded — surviving complete copies are few, and prices are among the highest of any HuCard. The TurboGrafx's white whale.
The platform's mascot and most recognisable game — the caveman who fronted NEC's marketing war against Mario and Sonic. The cultural anchor of the US library and the obvious cornerstone of a TurboGrafx collection.
A landmark of the CD-ROM era — voice acting and Red Book audio on the TurboGrafx-CD when the rest of the industry was still on cartridges. Emblematic of the platform's pioneering CD library, a deep collecting vein of its own.

First-print indicators
The grammar collectors use to authenticate and date copies of this platform.
The platform used the credit-card-sized HuCard and, via the add-on, CD-ROM. The format is the first fact about any TurboGrafx game and determines its market — HuCards and CDs are collected as distinct sets.
The same hardware sold as the PC Engine in Japan with an incompatible HuCard orientation and a vastly deeper library. The Japanese catalogue is one of the richest import veins in collecting; region determines compatibility and scarcity.
US TurboGrafx games shipped in clamshell cases with manuals and inserts. Completeness is central to value, especially for the scarce late releases.
The platform's grails (Magical Chase, Bonk 3) are late, small-run releases. Catalogue position late in the US life is the primary driver of HuCard scarcity.
CD releases require the TurboGrafx-CD add-on and System Card; complete CD copies include the jewel case, manual and inserts, and are a separate collecting tier from the HuCards.
