Why collectors care

eleased by Capcom in June 1989 for the NES, Mega Man 2 is the peak of the original 8-bit Mega Man cycle. Eight Robot Masters, the introduction of the password save system, and the canonical soundtrack scored by Manami Matsumae and Takashi Tateishi defined the action-platformer template for the rest of the era.

The North American 1989 cover is the notorious 'wrong' Mega Man artwork — a middle-aged man with a pistol rather than the blue robot character. This makes the 1989 first print one of the most visually identifiable third-party NES boxes. Sealed first-print WATA 9.4 A+ trades $2,500–8,000; the Capcom 1989 packaging (pre-Player's Choice) is the structurally scarce variant.
