Square Soft founded 1986; merged with Enix in 2003 to form Square Enix. The Final Fantasy series ran from a 1987 budget-conscious last-gasp on NES through three decades of platform-defining releases. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Vagrant Story, Xenogears — and FF VII, the JRPG that won the West for the genre.
