THE COLLECTOR'S ROOM

Grand Theft Auto

The top-down crime sim that became the open-world template — and the best-selling console game ever made.

Grand Theft Auto invented the modern open world. The 1997 original was a top-down crime sandbox that drew lawsuits and tabloid panics; GTA III in 2001 rebuilt it in 3D and handed the entire games industry a new template — the freedom, the radio, the lived-in city that every AAA studio has chased for two decades since. No franchise has shaped the shape of modern games more.

It is also the commercial colossus of the medium. San Andreas was the best-selling PS2 game; GTA V has sold over 200 million copies and is the best-selling console game in history. That ubiquity inverts the usual collecting logic: the famous entries are cheap and abundant, and the scarcity — and the value — lives at the very start, in the controversial, modest-selling 1997 original. The franchise everyone owns, with a grail almost no one has.

The grails

The variants and special editions that define the apex of the franchise — the objects a serious collection is measured against.

Where it all started
Grand Theft Auto — the 1997 origin

DMA Design's 1997 top-down crime sim was a moral-panic lightning rod and a modest seller — which is exactly why it's the scarcest object in the franchise. The PlayStation first print, with the original cover, is a four-to-five-figure sealed cartridge and the single most valuable Grand Theft Auto release: the controversial little game that became the biggest entertainment franchise of the modern era.

Grand Theft Auto III — the open-world reset

The 2001 PS2 entry took the series into 3D and reset the entire open-world genre — Liberty City, the radio stations, the freedom that every modern AAA game has copied since. It sold in the millions, so loose is trivial; the value is in the high-grade sealed first print of the most historically pivotal game on the platform.

The neon masterpiece
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

The 2002 follow-up traded grey Liberty City for an 80s Miami of neon and synth-pop — the most beloved aesthetic in the series and, for many, its creative peak. The PS2 first print is the connoisseur's choice; a sealed copy is a cornerstone of a PS2 Grand Theft Auto shelf.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
The late-PS2 apex
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The 2004 game was the biggest open world of its generation — three cities, a state, and the best-selling PlayStation 2 title ever. Enormous print runs make it cheap loose; a high-grade sealed first print (before the post-'Hot Coffee' re-release) is the version collectors chase.

Grand Theft Auto V — the juggernaut

The 2013 game has sold over 200 million copies — the best-selling single-platform-era console game in history and a phenomenon that has run for a full console generation. It will never be scarce, so the value is in pristine sealed first prints of the original PS3 release, the physical record of the biggest game ever made.

The origin grail
Grand Theft Auto
€15 → low five figures

A sealed first-print Grand Theft Auto is the scarcest object in the best-selling franchise of the modern era. DMA Design's 1997 top-down crime sim drew lawsuits, tabloid outrage and bans — and sold modestly, which is exactly why a high-grade sealed PlayStation copy is now a four-to-five-figure object. The whole inverted collecting story of the franchise is here: everyone owns GTA V; almost no one owns a sealed original.

The tape

Grand Theft Auto is the inverse of a normal collecting curve. The famous entries — III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV, V — sold in the tens of millions, so loose and CIB copies are nearly free and the value sits only at the very top sealed grades. The real scarcity is the 1997 PS1 original, a modest seller whose low print run makes a sealed copy a genuine grail. The modern entries are physical records of cultural juggernauts more than scarce objects; the origin is the one that compounds.

The acquisition plan

A Grand Theft Auto shelf is the cheapest in this catalogue to fill and the hardest to finish. The famous games cost almost nothing loose; the whole budget goes to one object.

Phase 1 — The famous games, loose
€60–€250

Acquire GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, IV and V loose and authentic — they're abundant and trivially cheap, and they complete most of the franchise for the price of a single sealed grail.

Phase 2 — CIB first prints
€400–€2,500

Upgrade the PS2 trilogy and GTA IV/V to complete-in-box first print, before the Player's Choice / Greatest Hits reissues and (for San Andreas) the post-'Hot Coffee' re-release.

Phase 3 — The origin grail
€3,000+

One object is the whole hunt: a sealed first-print 1997 PlayStation original. It is the scarcest and most valuable Grand Theft Auto release by a wide margin and the centre of gravity of any serious collection.

The most common errors
  1. 01
    Overpaying for the famous entries

GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and V sold in the tens of millions. Loose and CIB they're nearly free, and only the very top sealed grades command money — don't pay grail prices for a game everyone owns.

  2. 02
Buying the San Andreas re-release as the first print

After the 'Hot Coffee' controversy San Andreas was re-released with the content removed and a re-rated box. The original first print is the version collectors want — verify the rating and the printing before paying first-print money.

  3. 03
Ignoring the 1997 original because it's 'just top-down'

The origin looks primitive and sold poorly — which is precisely why it's the grail. A sealed first-print PS1 Grand Theft Auto is worth more than every other entry in the series combined in most grades.

  4. 04
Chasing the origin grail before the foundation

A sealed grail with gaps underneath it reads as a trophy, not a collection. Build the loose and CIB foundation first; the grail lands better when it crowns something complete.
