THE COLLECTOR'S ROOM

The Witcher

Geralt of Rivia and one of the greatest RPGs ever made — a three-game saga whose value lives in the statues that came in the Collector's Editions.

The Witcher turned a Polish studio and a series of Slavic fantasy novels into one of gaming's most respected names. CD Projekt Red's 2007 debut was rough but ambitious; The Witcher 2 sharpened it; and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2015 became a generational landmark — a vast, morally grey open world where the writing, the side quests and the sense of a lived-in place set a new bar for the RPG. Geralt of Rivia joined the medium's iconic protagonists, and the studio's reputation for craft (and for treating players well) became an industry reference point.

Its collecting market is small and edition-driven — only three mainline games, all modern and abundant on disc. The value lives in two places: the lavish Collector's Editions, above all the Wild Hunt set with its Geralt-versus-griffin statue, one of the most admired collector's editions of its era; and the early PC big-box of the 2007 original, the artifact of the franchise's humble beginning. The standard discs are cheap; the statues, art books and big-boxes are the grails.

The grails

The modern RPG landmark
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red's 2015 masterpiece is, for a great many players, the finest open-world RPG ever made — a vast, novelistic world where side quests carry more weight than most games' main stories. It sold tens of millions and won Game of the Year almost everywhere, so the disc is abundant; the value is in the lavish editions, not the standard copy.

The Griffin statue
The Witcher 3 Collector's Edition

The Wild Hunt Collector's Edition shipped with a large polystone statue of Geralt slaying a griffin — the very scene on the cover — plus a cloth map, an art book and a medallion. It's one of the most admired collector's editions of its generation, and complete and undamaged it's the franchise's true object grail, holding value where the disc does not.

The Witcher

The 2007 debut was a rough, ambitious PC RPG from an unknown Polish studio adapting beloved-at-home novels — the start of a developer that would become one of the most respected in the world. As an early big-box PC release, the boxed edition is the collectible artifact of the franchise's beginning.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The 2011 sequel was the great leap in ambition and polish that set up Wild Hunt — a denser, branching RPG that proved the studio could compete with the biggest names. The Xbox 360 and PC editions are the collectible versions; a complete copy is the bridge between the rough origin and the masterpiece.

The single most-coveted object in the franchise — and where the market actually prints it.

The statue grail
The Witcher 3 Collector's Edition
€150 → mid three figures

The Witcher 3 Collector's Edition is the franchise's real grail, and one of the most admired special editions of its generation. Where the standard Wild Hunt disc is abundant and near-free, the Collector's Edition shipped with a large polystone statue of Geralt slaying a griffin — the exact image on the cover — alongside a cloth map, a hardcover art book, a medallion and a collector's case. Complete and undamaged, it holds real value precisely because the components are fragile and the set was never reprinted. With a three-game canon and abundant discs, this is where Witcher collecting concentrates: not the game everyone owns, but the statue few kept intact.

The tape

The Witcher is a small, edition-driven market. Three mainline games, all modern and abundant on disc — even Wild Hunt, one of the best-selling RPGs ever, is a few euros loose. The value lives entirely in the lavish Collector's Editions (the Wild Hunt griffin-statue set above all) and the 2007 PC big-box origin. Collect the discs trivially; the grails are the statues and the boxes, and condition and completeness are the whole game.

The acquisition plan

A Witcher shelf is three cheap discs and one famous statue — the decisions are all about the editions.

Phase 1 — The trilogy, loose
€30–€80

Acquire all three games loose and authentic — they cost almost nothing, and complete the entire mainline for the price of a meal.

Phase 2 — The PC big-box
€60–€200

Add the 2007 PC big-box of the original — the artifact of the studio's beginning and the franchise's most meaningful early object.

Phase 3 — The Collector's Edition
€200+

The grail: a complete Wild Hunt Collector's Edition with the griffin statue, art book, cloth map and medallion, undamaged. The whole high end of the franchise in one box.

The most common errors
  1. 01
Expecting disc value from Wild Hunt

Wild Hunt sold in the tens of millions; the standard disc is near-worthless. The value is in the Collector's Edition and the editions — not the game everyone owns.

  2. 02
Buying a Collector's Edition with a damaged statue

The griffin statue is polystone and fragile, and the value is mostly in it. A chipped statue or a missing art book guts the price — completeness and condition are nearly the entire value.

  3. 03
    Overlooking the PC big-box origin

The 2007 big-box of the first game is the franchise's collectible artifact and easy to miss in a console search — it's the most meaningful early object to own.

  4. 04
Treating it as a deep franchise

There are only three mainline games. Depth here means editions and condition, not breadth — a complete trilogy plus the Collector's Edition is effectively the whole collection.
